PSI Field Hockey Umpires comprise a small group of eight officials who cover 12 schools in the area. There are 12 schools that field Varsity teams; in addition, eight of the twelve have a JV program as well. Almost all players begin playing the sport for the first time upon entering 9th grade. Like lacrosse, many reach 12th grade and have developed sufficient playing skills to continue on to the college level. With the introduction of artificial turf playing surfaces, skill levels have increased exponentially.
